Empowering Connections: Morgan Pitts and the Mission Behind #BlackGirlsWhoBlog

In today’s digital age, social media and blogging have become powerful tools for connection, creativity, and community building. Among the many online communities championing visibility and representation, #BlackGirlsWhoBlog stands out as a vibrant space dedicated to celebrating Black women bloggers. At the heart of this inspiring movement is Morgan Pitts, a visionary from the Washington D.C. metro area who founded the platform with a mission to uplift Black women in the blogosphere.

The Genesis of #BlackGirlsWhoBlog

Morgan Pitts’ journey into blogging wasn’t straightforward. During her senior year of college, despite encouragement from friends, she didn’t prioritize starting a blog. Her main focus was graduating, and though she was aware of blogs, she hadn’t deeply engaged with the blogging community. It wasn’t until after college, when a friend asked her to style her for pageant headshots, that Morgan saw blogging as a tool to showcase her work. She began her own personal blog in the spring of 2013 as a way to create tangible content and validate her styling skills before taking on clients.

The spark for #BlackGirlsWhoBlog came about somewhat accidentally in April 2014. Morgan tweeted about wanting to see a “Black girls who blog” t-shirt—an offhand remark tossed out without much expectation. Surprisingly, this tweet resonated among her small circle of Black women bloggers on Twitter. A friend, who was a fine artist, responded with an illustration idea for the logo, prompting Morgan to pursue the idea seriously. With that, they created the original logo and printed the first t-shirts, while Morgan set up an Instagram account to promote and showcase the brand.

Building a Community from Scratch

What started as a fun side project evolved into a thriving online community. Morgan began curating and highlighting talented Black women bloggers she admired, using daily themed posts to maintain consistency and engagement. Despite managing everything independently—as a one-woman show—she cultivated a welcoming, supportive space for Black women to be seen, heard, and celebrated.

The community grew organically, fueled by the use of the #BlackGirlsWhoBlog hashtag on Instagram and other social platforms. Morgan explains how the growth became a two-way street: bloggers tagged the page to be featured, and she discovered new voices through these interactions. Selection for features often involved curating content with a color-coordinated theme, ensuring each post was visually compelling and coherent.

Importantly, Morgan surprises those she features, making the experience more genuine and appreciated. This unexpected recognition has helped foster a sense of excitement and belonging within the community.

A Dynamic and Growing Movement

Over time, the community has evolved, drawing “day ones” who have supported it since its inception alongside newer members who’ve just discovered the platform. Morgan notes the dynamic nature of the community—always changing, yet grounded in a shared appreciation for quality content and mutual upliftment.

The platform’s impact is tangible. The hashtag #BlackGirlsWhoBlog recently surpassed one million uses on Instagram alone, marking a significant milestone that speaks to the expansive reach and influence of the community.

Lessons Along the Way

Morgan has learned a lot about the blogging world and the commitment behind it. One of her biggest realizations is how many Black women consistently maintain personal blogs with dedication and passion. This goes against the common assumption that only popular bloggers regularly update content. Instead, she found many bloggers pouring time, effort, and resources into their sites, underscoring a rich and diverse tapestry of voices within the community.

The Mission Moving Forward

At its core, #BlackGirlsWhoBlog is about empowerment and representation. Morgan’s work continues to spotlight talented Black women, providing them a platform that validates and amplifies their voices. Through her vision and tireless effort, the community has blossomed into a meaningful space that encourages connection, creativity, and celebration.

Morgan Pitts’ story is a testament to the power of intentional digital spaces in building supportive, encouraging networks. As #BlackGirlsWhoBlog continues to grow, it not only documents the work of Black women bloggers but also reinforces the narrative that their stories and creativity matter profoundly in the digital world.

Through platforms like #BlackGirlsWhoBlog, Morgan Pitts is shining a much-needed spotlight on Black women in blogging, inspiring others to claim space and celebrate their narratives online.
